By providing seeds, tools, knowledge, and redistribution, we wish to address current and worsening food insecurity by supporting local residents in growing food for themselves as well as our neighbors in need. We encourage individuals and organizations to work with us to create gardens throughout the Champaign-Urbana area and to donate seeds, garden supplies, and expertise.
Solidarity Gardens was launched in June of 2020 by Cunningham Township in collaboration with Sola Gratia Farm, Channing Murray Foundation, Urbana Free Library, Urbana Park District, and other community partners. Over the past season, we were able to:
- put approximately 1,000 sqft of community garden space under production;
- distribute over 1,200 starts and packets of seeds to gardeners in order to grow food for the hungry; and
- grow approximately 600 lbs of produce and bring it to families in need in CU.
We're working on reorganizing our garden volunteer system for next year to have an even more successful and fulfilling season, as well as setting up perennial gardens with teams of dedicated volunteers, exploring ways to process and package some of our produce, and holding events to highlight the food producers that make our local food network so strong. If you think you'd like to be involved next year, let us know here!
