Volunteer

Our volunteers, donors, and supporters are the reason we’re able to do the work we do. YOU are the one creating food for our community!

There are many different ways to volunteer with Solidarity Gardens! Which looks like it fits you?

Garden Caretakers    are the backbone of each individual garden, growing the garden from first planting to last harvest

  • Be a dependable part of a team of caretakers that do the everyday work of a garden
  • Regularly (once per week) attend a volunteer shift
  • Perform standard garden tasks such as: weeding, watering, planting, harvesting, thinning, trellising, applying compost, etc.
  • Occasionally assist with other garden tasks such as: cleaning tools, mowing, tilling, transporting tools or produce, etc.
  • Communicate with other garden caretakers and garden leader to plan and assign garden work
  • Work alone or in a group

Garden Hands    rotate to different gardens, working as a team to complete big tasks, like tilling or cover-cropping

  • Be willing to work on a variety of tasks in a variety of gardens as needed
  • Occasionally (once per month) attend a volunteer workday
  • Perform garden tasks such as: mending/putting up fences, planting, digging, applying compost, spreading mulch, etc.
  • Work well in a group
  • Follow garden leader’s directions

Gleaners    People who want help with harvest by washing and packing produce at the gardens

  • Regularly (once per week) attend a volunteer shift at a local SGCU garden (likely Meadowbrook, Douglas, and Victory Park- potentially others as requested)
  • Follow garden leader’s directions on best practice for washing and packing produce
  • work well in a a group
  • help transport produce from the garden to a distribution location (Sola Gratia Farm or Red Herring)

Cooks    People who can help package, portion, chop, and process locally grown produce to feed neighbors in need

  • Be able to attend a weekly 1-2 hour cooking shift at the Red Herring during the heat of harvest season (mid july- mid october)
  • follow kitchen lead’s instructions on best practice/health and safety
  • wear closed-toed shoes
  • work in a team to package produce for optimal freshness
  • work in a team to chop, can and/or process produce to help make it ready to eat for neighbors

Specialist

Want to get involved in SGCU and have a special skill? Tell us your skills; it takes all kinds!

Special Skills could include (but are not limited to)

  • Construction (maybe you can build a garden bed, tool shed, or picnic bench, or…)
  • Graphic and Web Design (perhaps you can design fliers, website, social media etc.)
  • Fundraising (perhaps you can amplify our effort, or start your own campaign)
  • Event Planning (create community by throwing an event in a SGCU garden)

To volunteer with us, we ask that you:

  • Be able to commit to pre-scheduled volunteer shifts
  • Know about gardening or be willing to learn
  • Be enthusiastic about feeding your community
  • Communicate with people of diverse ages, backgrounds, and abilities

Fill out the form below to get on our volunteer list!

You can check "I don't want to volunteer right now, but please keep me in the loop" if you don't want to volunteer but would like to receive information about volunteering.

And if you're a home gardener, you can let us know that too! Home gardeners are an important part of our team, embodying our mission from a personal perspective and helping us grow more food for the community.

We're excited to work with you!

How would you like to be involved?
